Beyond the Mago–Chuna valleys
The lake lies beyond Mago and Chuna Valley in Tawang district. Reports describe an altitude of approximately 15,600 feet; this is a reported figure, not a surveyed elevation supplied by this guide. Its high mountain setting makes the approach and conditions central to planning a visit.
A journey planned around the route
The commonly described approach runs from Jang through Mago and Chuna Valley towards Gongkar La Lake. Treat the lake as the main objective of a remote itinerary rather than an extra stop on a standard Tawang sightseeing day.
The route crosses remote mountain terrain with difficult off-road sections, particularly near the lake. A published motorist’s account illustrates the rough approach, but one vehicle’s successful trip does not establish that the road is suitable for every vehicle or group. Agree the vehicle, local support, overnight arrangements and any final walking stages before departure.
Access and mountain conditions
Access is subject to prevailing road and weather conditions and applicable security permissions. Confirm traveller eligibility and the authorised approach with the local operating team before booking; a report of an earlier visit is not confirmation that access is currently permitted.
Allow the local team to assess the route close to departure and change or postpone the outing if conditions require. This guide does not promise unrestricted access, a fixed driving time or an easy final approach.
