Health & Altitude Advice for Tawang Travellers
A Tawang journey involves high-altitude destinations, cold weather and long mountain drives. Allow time to adjust, travel at a comfortable pace and take any unusual symptoms seriously.
Know the altitude
| Destination | Approximate altitude |
|---|---|
| Tawang town | 3,048 metres / 10,000 feet |
| Sela Pass | 4,170 metres / 13,700 feet |
| Bumla Pass | 4,633 metres / 15,200 feet |
These elevations can affect travellers even when reaching them by vehicle. Being physically fit does not guarantee protection from altitude illness.
Before travelling
Senior travellers should arrange a pre-travel consultation, particularly if they have existing medical conditions or take regular medication. Anyone with heart or lung disease, problems with blood oxygen, sleep apnoea, poorly controlled blood pressure, diabetes or previous altitude illness should discuss the itinerary with their doctor.
Show your doctor the destinations, highest altitude and overnight stops. Ask whether the planned journey and high-altitude excursions are suitable, and whether any itinerary or medication adjustments are needed. Carry your prescribed medicines, prescriptions and a brief medical summary.
Take everything at a comfortable pace
- Walk slowly, take frequent breaks and avoid rushing uphill or climbing stairs quickly.
- Avoid running, strenuous games and heavy exercise, especially during the first 48 hours at altitude. Supervise children so they do not overexert themselves.
- Allow time to rest and acclimatise before higher excursions. A slower walking pace helps reduce exertion but does not replace gradual ascent.
- Drink water regularly to avoid dehydration. Do not force excessive amounts; follow your doctor's advice if you have a fluid restriction.
- Avoid alcohol during the first 48 hours at altitude. Keep warm and avoid pushing yourself to complete every sightseeing stop.
If you feel unwell
Tell your driver or tour coordinator promptly if you develop a headache with nausea, dizziness or unusual tiredness after ascending. Stop further ascent and seek medical advice; do not continue higher while symptoms persist.
Breathlessness at rest, confusion, difficulty walking steadily or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent medical help and assisted descent. Do not leave the affected person alone or wait until the next day.
Medical assistance and emergency travel
Tawang has a government district hospital. Seek the nearest available medical help promptly; do not delay initial assessment while planning a long journey to another city.
Further treatment may require referral to another hospital, potentially in Tezpur or Guwahati, depending on the condition and available services. District Hospital Bomdila is also on the wider travel corridor. The treating clinician should guide referral and transport arrangements.
Transfers through the mountains can take many hours and may be delayed by weather, snow, landslides or road closures. A fixed arrival time cannot be assured.
