Why Living Roots
Living Roots arranges Assam and Arunachal Pradesh itineraries through road closures, festival seasons and every kind of Sela weather.
We are based in the region and plan routes from Guwahati rather than reselling someone else's departure.
Experienced hill drivers and suitable vehicles are arranged for the complete route, including the authorised local vehicle needed for the Bumla sector.
We assist with Inner Line Permit formalities for Indian nationals and Protected Area Permit paperwork for foreign nationals.
Nothing here is a fixed template. Tell us your dates, pace and interests and we redraw the route. A guide can be included according to the programme.
Snow, landslides and clearance delays are normal here. We stay reachable and rework the plan on the ground when conditions change.
Our itineraries are designed with sensible overnight halts and gradual altitude gain. Travellers with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before visiting high-altitude areas.
One quote with inclusions and exclusions listed in writing, so you know whether items such as the local Bumla vehicle are covered.

Two roads in
Guwahati → Bhalukpong → Bomdila → Dirang → Sela → Tawang
The established highway approach over Sela Pass, with the usual overnight halts at Dirang or Bomdila. It is the quickest way up and the one most itineraries are built on.
Suits: First-time travellers and shorter windows

A quieter cultural and wildlife-led approach through the Orang grassland, the Balemu forest belt and the Sherdukpen village of Shergaon before joining the main road at Dirang.

December – February
Heavy snow at Sela and Bumla, -8°C nights, dramatic light and the fewest visitors of the year.
March – June
Rhododendrons may be in bloom, while access to higher roads such as Mago and Zemithang depends on weather, road conditions and current permissions.
July – August
Waterfalls at full force and valleys at their greenest, offset by landslide risk on the Assam approach.
September – November
The clearest skies of the year, first snow at Sela by late November, and the finest mountain visibility.
Once you have picked a month, the next question is length. Snow and monsoon travel needs a spare day, so we usually suggest the Tawang 6N/7D itinerary then; in the dry months the Tawang 5N/6D itinerary works. Compare both on our Tawang tour packages page.
