History

Notified as a sanctuary in 1985 and a national park in 1999, Orang protects one of the last intact alluvial grassland systems on the Brahmaputra's north bank.

Culture

Fishing and grazing communities ring the park; the buffer villages run small guesthouses and boat trips.

Photography tips

Adding Orang takes one extra night and transforms a Tawang itinerary into a wildlife trip. Book safari permits a week ahead in season.

How to reach

North bank of the Brahmaputra off NH-15; jeep safaris depart from the Silbori range gate at dawn.
