Tawang Photography Guide

Arunachal sits at the eastern edge of India's single time zone, which means the sun rises absurdly early — before 5 a.m. in June, around 5:30 in November — and sets by 4:30 p.m. in winter. Your usable golden hour is at the start of the day, and almost every itinerary wastes it by leaving at eight. Ask your driver for a 5:30 a.m. start at least twice in the trip and you will come home with a different set of photographs.

Less obvious but consistently productive: the woven cane bridges, Monpa village lanes in Thembang and Mukto, and the Sangti crane meadows at first light in January and February.

Courtyards are generally open to photography. Inside the prayer halls it depends on the hall and whether prayers are in progress — always ask a monk, and accept a refusal without negotiating. Never photograph a person's face without permission, particularly novices and elderly women. Do not use flash near thangkas: pigment damage from repeated flash is a real and documented problem.

Tawang district is a sensitive border area. Drone flying is restricted or prohibited near military installations, the Bumla and Zemithang roads and parts of Tawang town, and rules change without notice. Assume you need local permission everywhere and obtain it in advance through your operator. Flying a drone at a checkpost is a genuinely serious matter here, not a minor infraction.

Battery life collapses at Sela and Bumla — carry three or four spares warm in an inside pocket. Condensation is the real risk: seal the camera in a bag before bringing it into a heated room and let it warm slowly. A polariser is more useful than an ND filter on this trip, given the haze and the snow glare. Wide (16–35 mm) and a short tele (70–200 mm) cover almost everything; the tele is what you will actually use for the ridge compressions.
