Tawang Snowfall Guide

November can bring the first dustings, most often at Sela before Tawang town, though the timing varies year to year. December often sees snow at the pass and, in some years, the first town snowfall towards the end of the month. January and February are typically the peak months for multiple snowfalls and sustained cover, but none of this can be guaranteed on specific dates.

March holds snow at Sela and on the high approaches while Tawang town begins to clear. April usually offers snow walls along the road cutting rather than fresh falls — often the most photogenic combination, because the sky is clear. By May only the high pass and shaded gullies hold anything.

These are two different questions. Sela at 4,170 metres holds snow far longer and far more reliably than Tawang town at 3,048 metres. A trip in late March may well give you deep snow at the pass and none at your hotel. If your goal is to wake up to snow outside the window, travel between the second half of December and the end of February.

Add a buffer day. Accept that Bumla and Sangetsar are likely closed. Choose a hotel for heating rather than view. Travel with an operator who can hold you at Dirang for a day without charging you for it, and be honest with yourself about tolerance for cold — this is not a Shimla winter, it is a Himalayan frontier one.
