5 Nights / 6 Days Tawang Tour

Day 1 — Guwahati → Dirang (390 km, 10–11 h): Early departure from Guwahati — an early start is essential on this compact itinerary. Drive via Tezpur, Bhalukpong, where the Arunachal Pradesh entry formalities are completed, and Tipi, then climb past Nechiphu to Bomdila and descend to Dirang. Overnight Dirang (1,560 m) — the halt that keeps the altitude gain gradual.

Day 2 — Dirang → Tawang via Sela (140 km, 6–7 h): Visit Dirang Dzong or another suitable Dirang attraction depending on available time, then drive through Sela Pass (4,170 m) or the Sela Tunnel according to road conditions. Sela Lake, Jaswant Garh and Nuranang Falls are visited subject to time and accessibility. Continue to Tawang. Overnight Tawang (3,048 m).

Day 3 — Bumla Pass, PT Tso & Sangetsar Lake: Excursion in an authorised local vehicle from Tawang, subject to local permit formalities, Army clearance, weather, security and road conditions. Bumla Pass (4,633 m), PT Tso and Sangetsar Lake are visited wherever permission and conditions allow; access cannot be guaranteed in advance and foreign nationals are not permitted to visit Bumla Pass. Return to Tawang. Overnight Tawang.

Day 4 — Tawang sightseeing: Tawang Monastery, Urgelling Monastery (birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama), the Giant Buddha, the craft centre and the Tawang War Memorial, visited according to opening hours and available time. Overnight Tawang.

Day 5 — Tawang → Dirang or Bomdila (140 km, 6–7 h): Return through the Sela sector with time for the photographs missed on the way up. Optional halt at Sangti Valley or Mandala Top depending on light and road conditions. Overnight Dirang or Bomdila, depending on the confirmed itinerary and hotel availability.

Day 6 — Dirang or Bomdila → Guwahati (10–11 h): Drive back to Guwahati through Bhalukpong and Tezpur for your departure, or for an additional Guwahati night depending on flight or train timing. This is a long road day, so allow for an additional Guwahati night or a suitably timed onward departure according to confirmed road, weather and flight conditions.

Five nights in total: 1 night Dirang on the way up, 3 nights Tawang for the town, the monasteries and the Bumla–PT Tso–Sangetsar high circuit, and 1 night Dirang or Bomdila coming down. This compact itinerary requires an early start from Guwahati. Guests arriving later in the day should add one night in Guwahati. Six nights / seven days or longer is the more comfortable way to do the same route.

Driving days on this circuit are long in hours rather than kilometres: 25–30 km/h averages are normal above Bhalukpong. We start at 06:00 on the two Assam–Arunachal transit days so that no leg is driven after dark.

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, issued online or at Bhalukpong; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit applied for well in advance. Bumla Pass, PT Tso and Sangetsar Lake are visited in an authorised local vehicle from Tawang, subject to local permit formalities, Army clearance, weather, security and road conditions; access cannot be guaranteed in advance, and foreign nationals are not permitted to visit Bumla Pass.

Carry original photo ID and passport photographs. Bumla and Sangetsar close in heavy snow, typically for spells between late December and March, which is one more reason to keep a buffer day in the plan.

Yes — but only if the plan is built around the driving rather than around a wish list. Six days gives you four mountain days and two long transit days. The itinerary works because it accepts that reality instead of fighting it: one night in Dirang going up, three nights in Tawang, one night in Dirang or Bomdila coming down, and no attempt to squeeze Zemithang or Mago into the gaps.

What you lose is margin. There is no spare day. If Sela closes on your Bumla morning, the border run is gone and there is nothing to trade it against. Travellers who cannot accept that should read the 6 nights / 7 days Tawang tour instead, where the extra night exists precisely to absorb one bad weather day.

On both transit days we leave at 06:00. This is not enthusiasm. The Bhalukpong–Dirang gorge section is unlit, single-lane in places and shares the road with military convoys and tipper trucks. Doing it in daylight is the difference between a long day and an unsafe one. An early start also means you reach Dirang with time to walk the valley rather than checking in after dark.

The same logic applies to the Bumla day. Army clearance is issued in the morning and the road is at its best before the afternoon cloud builds. Groups that leave Tawang at nine routinely find Sangetsar under flat white light by the time they arrive.

The 5N/6D plan climbs from 55 metres to 3,048 metres in two days, then to 4,633 metres on day three. That is fast. The Dirang night at 1,560 metres is the one concession the schedule makes, and it does most of the work.

Practical measures that matter more than any tablet: drink far more water than feels necessary from day one, skip alcohol on the first two mountain nights, eat lightly on the Bumla morning, and tell your guide immediately if you get a headache that paracetamol does not touch. Our itineraries are designed with sensible overnight halts and gradual altitude gain, and the honest answer on a bad day is to turn around — Bumla is 37 kilometres away, not a summit push. Travellers with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before visiting high-altitude areas.

Because there is no buffer day, the compressed itinerary is more season-sensitive than the longer ones. March to early June and late September to November are the sensible windows. Monsoon adds landslide risk in the gorge, which on a six-day plan means a missed flight rather than a rearranged day. Deep winter adds pass closures with nothing held in reserve.
