History

Mukto sits in a cluster of old Monpa settlements that supplied grain and labour to Tawang Monastery for centuries. Small clan gompas dot the ridges, several of them older than they look.

Culture

Farming, weaving and monastery service still structure the calendar. Buckwheat and barley terraces step down the slope in a pattern that has not changed in generations.

Photography tips

Golden hour across the terraces, shot from the road above the village, gives the layered depth Tawang town cannot. Autumn buckwheat turns the fields rust-red.

Local travel tips

An excellent half-day out from Tawang when the Bumla excursion is delayed by weather or clearance.

How to reach

About 1.5 hours south-west of Tawang town.
