History
Lumla is the administrative centre for Tawang's western circle and an old halt on the footpath towards Bhutan. Its lower altitude made it a wintering point for herders coming down off the high pastures.
Culture
Monpa villages here farm rather than herd, and the pace is markedly gentler than in Tawang town. Small monasteries hold annual mask-dance festivals with almost no outside audience.
Photography tips
Mist rolling through the pine and the terraced fields below the town in early morning. This is a mood-and-atmosphere location rather than a landmark one.
Local travel tips
Break the Zemithang drive here for lunch. It turns a long day into a comfortable one, especially with children or older travellers.
