Dirang Travel Guide

Two reasons. Comfort: it has the best hotel rooms on the circuit, heated, spacious, with reliable hot water — nothing in Tawang town matches them. And physiology: a night at 1,560 m before crossing Sela at 4,170 m is a sensible acclimatisation step, particularly for families and older travellers.

Itineraries that treat Dirang as a bathroom stop en route to Tawang are the ones travellers regret. A full day here is never wasted.

The old fortified settlement above the river is the most atmospheric thing in town: narrow stone lanes, timber-fronted houses, a small gompa and a 500-year-old dzong structure. It takes forty minutes to walk and is entirely free. Go in the late afternoon when the light comes down the valley and the village is active.

The sulphur hot springs beside the river are used by locals for their curative reputation. Facilities are basic; the experience is genuine rather than spa-like. The valley grows apples, kiwi and walnuts — kiwi harvest in November is a good time to buy directly from orchards. The National Research Centre on Yak, a short drive out, is an unexpectedly interesting stop and one of the few places to see yak up close without going to Mago.

Two excursions justify the extra night. Sangti Valley, fifteen minutes away, is a broad river meadow where black-necked cranes overwinter — sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed, but the valley is worth the drive in any month. Mandala Top, a rough climb above town, has 108 stupas on a ridge with an enormous panorama; go at sunrise, and check road condition after rain.

Dirang has valley resorts with heating and garden space at the top end, several solid mid-range hotels, and homestays in Sangti and the surrounding villages. Restaurant food here is the best on the route, with a few genuinely good Tibetan kitchens. Book ahead in May, June and October.

Mobile coverage is decent on Airtel and Jio. ATMs work but can run empty at weekends. Fuel is available. The road onward to Sela climbs steeply from town, so if you are prone to motion sickness, this is the morning to take something before you leave rather than after.
