Best Time to Visit Tawang

If you want the highest chance of every road on the circuit being open — Sela, Bumla, Sangetsar, Zemithang and Mago — travel between late March and mid-June, or between late September and mid-November. Those two windows give firm road surfaces, moderate temperatures and the widest choice of sightseeing.

If you specifically want snow on the ground, travel between mid-December and early March and accept that Bumla and Sangetsar may be shut for days at a time. If you want green valleys and dramatic waterfalls and you do not mind losing a day to a landslide, the monsoon has its own case.

Spring is the most under-rated season on this circuit. Sela still holds snow walls on either side of the cleared road well into April, but the surface itself is dry. Rhododendrons come up the mountain in a wave — Bomdila and Dirang in late March, Sela's shoulder slopes through April, the highest gullies in early May.

Daytime temperatures in Tawang town sit around 12–18°C, dropping close to freezing overnight. This is the season when photographers get both snow and blue sky in the same frame, and when Bumla reopens after the winter closures.

The first half of June is still workable, with warm days in the valleys and clear high country. From about the third week the pre-monsoon sets in over the Kameng gorge and the Bhalukpong–Dirang stretch begins to shed rock. Plan a buffer day if you travel in the back half of the month.

This is the season we advise against for first-time travellers. The problem is not Tawang itself, which often sits above the cloud, but the gorge road between Bhalukpong and Dirang, where landslides close the highway for anything from two hours to two days. Nuranang Falls is at its most spectacular, valleys are electric green, and hotel availability is easy — but the schedule risk is real and no operator can engineer it away.

Statistically the cleanest air of the year. Once the monsoon withdraws, visibility from Sela and Mandala Top stretches to the Bhutan and Gori Chen ranges. October and early November also carry the festival calendar — Torgya at Tawang Monastery falls in the winter, but harvest and village gompa festivals run through autumn. Nights in Tawang drop to 2–5°C by early November.

Snow season. Sela receives its first serious falls in December and can accumulate through February. The Border Roads Organisation clears the pass road as a priority, and the Sela Tunnel has removed the worst of the top-of-the-pass risk, but temporary closures still happen after heavy nights. Bumla and Sangetsar close more often than they open in January.

Winter travellers should build two spare days into a Tawang itinerary and expect intermittent hot water and power in Tawang town. In exchange they get an empty monastery, snow-lined roads and photographs nobody gets in May.

Families with young children and older travellers do best in April, May, October — mild, dry and low-drama. Honeymooners get the most from October and November, when skies are clear and hotels are not full. Photographers should target late March or late October. Snow-seekers should accept January or February and treat Bumla as a bonus, not a plan.
