History
Shergaon is the winter settlement of the Sherdukpen, who historically migrated seasonally between here and the Doimara foothills. The village has won national cleanliness recognition and pioneered community-run homestays in Arunachal.
Culture
Khiksaba, the Sherdukpen new-year festival, runs over several days in winter. Homestays are family homes, not converted hotels, and meals are eaten with the household.
Photography tips
Mist through the pine belt at dawn, apple and kiwi orchards in October, and forest birding hides above the village.

Two nights minimum. One is enough to see it; two is enough to actually be here.
How to reach
Turn off NH-13 near Tenga toward Rupa, then continue to Shergaon on a good surfaced road.
Chhoskhorong Waterfall and village nature stops
Incredible India identifies Chhoskhorong Waterfall among Shergaon’s natural attractions, alongside the trout hatchery fish pond. The waterfall adds a nature-focused interest to a stay in this Sherdukpen village, complementing time spent exploring its cultural heritage.
Discuss the waterfall approach with your local guide when choosing the day’s walk. Wet surfaces and water levels can affect the outing; a waterfall visit is not an invitation to swim.
Shergaon Heritage Walks & Traditional Trails
Shergaon’s walking heritage is part of its cultural preservation. Incredible India describes the local NGO Garung Thuk and the village council as rediscovering and safeguarding ancient trekking routes. It also highlights cultural interpretation initiatives and a village museum displaying traditional utensils and agricultural equipment.
A guided village walk can introduce these cultural interests without turning everyday community life into a staged attraction. Arrange visits to homes and working land with the hosts, and ask before taking portraits.
Choose a particular trail with a local guide who can explain its route and suitability. A short village walk and a longer traditional path are different outings; the agreed route, weather and group’s needs determine the choice. Stay on permitted paths and avoid disturbing crops, wildlife or sacred places.
The Bailey Trail belongs to the separate Thembang/Chander trekking context. It should not be confused with Shergaon village walks or treated as an easy sightseeing addition.

Choose Shergaon for a slower route
The village is reached via Rupa from the Tenga side of NH-13 and is about two hours from Bomdila in ordinary conditions. Two nights give enough time to settle into a family homestay and explore beyond the road.
Homestays here are family homes rather than converted hotels. Meals and daily routines are part of the stay, so arrive with time and realistic expectations about facilities.
Birding and orchard focus
The pine belt, orchards and nearby forest gradient make Shergaon a useful base for travellers interested in birds and quiet landscape photography. Dawn is the practical time for both bird activity and mist in the pine belt.
October brings apple and kiwi orchard interest, while the broader October-to-May period is the operating window stated in our destination records.
Building it into a Tawang journey
Treat Shergaon and Rupa as a separate West Kameng detour rather than an extra stop on a tightly timed Sela crossing day. It is best suited to travellers willing to add at least one day to the standard route.
