History

Dirang grew around a 500-year-old stone dzong that guarded the trade route between the Tawang tract and the Assam plains. Families still live inside the fort walls.

Culture

Monpa apple and kiwi country, with hot sulphur springs used by locals through winter and India's only National Research Centre on Yak on the edge of town.

Photography tips

The dzong at golden hour, the river braid below the bridge, and Sangti Valley fifteen minutes away for cranes and orchard light.

Local travel tips

Sleep here, not at Bomdila, and take a full day. Thirty-six hours at 1,560 m before Sela is the single best thing you can do for your trip.

How to reach

On NH-13 between Bomdila and Sela. Every Tawang itinerary passes through it.
