History
Thembang is a walled village with stone gateways at either end, historically the seat of a Monpa clan that collected tolls on the trans-Himalayan trade route. Sections of the wall and the two dzong gates survive, and the settlement sits on India's UNESCO tentative list.
Culture
The community runs a conservation-linked tourism initiative and homestays inside the old walls. Elders can still recount the toll system and the clan lineages tied to individual houses.
Photography tips
Late afternoon side-light on the stone walls is the shot. Interiors are dark — a fast prime and a willingness to sit quietly with a family for an hour beats any flash.

Thembang is a living settlement with surviving stone walls and dzong gateways, not an open-air monument. Walk quietly, ask before photographing residents or interiors and follow directions given by homestay hosts and elders.
Its inclusion on India's UNESCO tentative list describes heritage significance; it should not be presented as a fully inscribed World Heritage Site.
Day visit or overnight?
The branch-road drive takes about an hour from Dirang in ordinary conditions. A short visit can cover the gateways and village lanes, but an overnight stay gives a better understanding of the settlement and supports community-run hospitality.
