6 Nights / 7 Days Tawang Tour

Day 1 — Guwahati → Nameri / Bhalukpong (approx. 4–5 h): Drive out of Guwahati via Tezpur to the Nameri and Bhalukpong belt on the Assam–Arunachal boundary — the recognised gateway to the classic Tawang route and a comfortable break in the long drive. Depending on the season, park timings and forest department permissions, an optional nature walk, birding stroll or river activity may be possible; nothing is guaranteed. Overnight Nameri or Bhalukpong.

Day 2 — Nameri/Bhalukpong → Dirang via Tipi (approx. 6–7 h): Arunachal Pradesh entry formalities at Bhalukpong, then on past Tipi and its orchid centre, climbing through Nechiphu and Bomdila before the descent to Dirang. Overnight Dirang (1,560 m).

Day 3 — Dirang → Tawang via Sela Pass (140 km, 6–7 h): Dirang Dzong or Sangti Valley as time allows, then Sela Pass (4,170 m) or the Sela Tunnel according to road conditions, Sela Lake, Jaswant Garh and Nuranang Falls at Jang. Arrive Tawang by evening. Overnight Tawang (3,048 m).

Day 4 — Bumla Pass, PT Tso & Sangetsar Lake: Excursion in an authorised local vehicle from Tawang — Y-Junction, PT Tso, Bumla (4,633 m) and Sangetsar Lake — subject to local permit formalities, Army clearance, weather, security and road conditions. Access cannot be guaranteed in advance; foreign nationals are not permitted to visit Bumla Pass. Return to Tawang by late afternoon.

Day 5 — Tawang town, monasteries & Zemithang option: Dawn prayers at Tawang Monastery, Urgelling, Giant Buddha, craft centre and the War Memorial. Alternatively swap in a full-day drive to Zemithang for Gorsam Chorten, or Mukto and Lumla for terraced valleys. Overnight Tawang.

Day 6 — Tawang → Bomdila (approx. 6–7 h): Return over Sela, with unhurried stops at Jang, Nuranang and the Sela viewpoints, then on to Bomdila for the monastery and the valley viewpoint. Overnight Bomdila.

Day 7 — Bomdila → Guwahati (approx. 10 h): Descend through Tipi and Bhalukpong to the plains, Tezpur lunch halt and the run into Guwahati. This is a long road day, so allow for an additional Guwahati night or a suitably timed onward departure according to confirmed road, weather and flight conditions.

The balanced classic circuit: 1 night at Nameri/Bhalukpong as a first-day route break, 1 night Dirang, 3 nights Tawang and 1 night Bomdila on the way down. A slower alternative with 2 nights at Dirang and no Nameri halt can be arranged on request.

Driving days on this circuit are long in hours rather than kilometres: 25–30 km/h averages are normal above Bhalukpong. We start at 06:00 on the two Assam–Arunachal transit days so that no leg is driven after dark.

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for Arunachal Pradesh, issued online or at Bhalukpong; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit applied for well in advance. Bumla Pass, PT Tso and Sangetsar Lake are visited in an authorised local vehicle from Tawang, subject to local permit formalities, Army clearance, weather, security and road conditions; access cannot be guaranteed in advance, and foreign nationals are not permitted to visit Bumla Pass.

Carry original photo ID and passport photographs. Bumla and Sangetsar close in heavy snow, typically for spells between late December and March, which is one more reason to keep a buffer day in the plan.

One night. Used well, that night is the difference between a trip that survives bad weather and one that does not. In the classic version it is spent at Nameri or Bhalukpong on day one, breaking a very long Assam drive at the recognised gateway to the Tezpur–Bhalukpong–Bomdila–Dirang–Tawang route.

The alternative, available on request, is to skip the Nameri halt and give Dirang a full day instead: Sangti Valley in the early morning when the black-necked cranes winter there, the hot springs, the old Dirang Dzong, the National Research Centre on Yak, and Mandala Top for the ridge view towards the Gorichen massif. Either way the extra night is margin, so a shut Sela or a refused Bumla clearance costs you nothing but a rearranged morning.

Dirang is treated as a fuel stop by most operators, which is a mistake. At 1,560 metres it is the only place on the circuit where you sleep warm, breathe easily and can walk for an hour without the altitude reminding you. It also happens to sit beside one of the loveliest valleys in West Kameng.

Sangti Valley is fifteen minutes away: terraced fields, a braided river, kiwi and apple orchards, and in a good winter a handful of black-necked cranes. Mandala Top adds an hour of climbing to 108 stupas on a ridge with, on a clear morning, the whole eastern Himalayan wall in view. The Dirang hot springs are unglamorous and genuinely restorative after day one.

The seven-day plan reaches Dirang at 1,560 metres a day later and less tired than the compressed version, and only then continues towards 3,048 metres. Travellers over sixty, anyone who has struggled at altitude before, and families with young children generally find this pace easier than the compressed one. Anyone with an existing health condition should consult a qualified medical professional before travelling at altitude.

The buffer day makes this itinerary the only one we are comfortable recommending for January and February. Snow at Sela is part of the appeal in those months, and with a spare day a temporary closure becomes an inconvenience rather than a cancelled highlight.

In monsoon the same day covers landslide clearance in the Kameng gorge. In peak autumn you will probably not need the margin at all, in which case it becomes a slow morning in Sangti with a flask of tea, which nobody has ever complained about.
