History
Rupa is the principal Sherdukpen settlement, a community that historically wintered in the Assam foothills and summered in these valleys, trading between the plains and Tibet. That seasonal migration shaped everything from house design to festival timing.
Culture
The Khiksaba festival, with its masked dances and ritual procession, is the cultural high point of the Sherdukpen year. Orange, kiwi and apple orchards fill the valley floor.
Photography tips
Festival portraiture is exceptional here. Otherwise work the orchard terraces in low light and the old stone-and-timber houses in the upper village.
Local travel tips
Combine Rupa with Shergaon as a two-night detour on Route 2 — it costs one extra day and completely changes the cultural depth of the trip.
