When is the best time to travel?

March to June and late September to November give the most reliable roads; December to February is the snow season, with a real chance of temporary closures at Sela.

How do you reach Tawang?

Fly or take a train to Guwahati, then drive via Tezpur, Bomdila, Dirang and Sela Pass. The road journey is roughly 520 km and is done over two days in either direction.

What permits are needed?

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Bumla Pass and other border areas need additional Army clearance arranged locally, and foreign nationals are not permitted to visit Bumla Pass. We assist with permit formalities for travellers booked with us.

How small-group departures work

Small-group and fixed-departure trips are announced periodically or arranged when a suitable group is confirmed. Enquire for current possibilities.

Vehicles, local services, guides and accommodation are arranged according to the itinerary, group size and travel conditions. A guide can be included according to the programme.

Choosing when to travel

Spring (late March to May) and autumn (October–November) are generally the most requested windows for a Tawang trip, with the best combination of road conditions and visibility. Winter departures are possible but depend on snow conditions at Sela and Bumla. Tell us your preferred window and we will let you know what is realistic.

If a small-group date does not suit you

If our next confirmed small-group departure does not match your dates, we can put together a private, custom-dated itinerary on the same route instead. Costs and inclusions are shared once your dates, group size and choice of stays are known.
