History

Built in the 12th century by a Monpa monk and modelled on Boudhanath in Kathmandu, Gorsam is the largest stupa in the region and the spiritual anchor of the Pangchen valley.

Culture

The Gorsam Kora festival in late winter draws pilgrims from across the valley and from Bhutan, with continuous circumambulation for days.

Photography tips

Dawn mist off the river behind the whitewashed dome. Circumambulating pilgrims at slow shutter give motion against the static stupa.

Local travel tips

Time your trip to Gorsam Kora if you can — it is one of the great living festivals of the eastern Himalaya and almost unphotographed by outsiders.

How to reach

Near Zemithang, about 4 hours from Tawang.
