Chumi Gyatse — 108 Holy Waterfalls

Chumi Gyatse is a sacred waterfall site near Tsechu village (Damteng), in the remote border region of Tawang district. Its 108 streams and significance in Monpa Buddhist tradition make it a pilgrimage visit rather than a quick roadside waterfall stop.

The 108 streams and their significance

Arunachal Tourism describes 108 waterfall streams revered by the Monpa community. Tawang Tourism recounts the belief that Guru Rinpoche cast a rosary against the rocks, giving rise to the streams. The story is part of the site’s religious tradition; the water is not presented here as a medical treatment.

The attraction is the series of streams and the sacred setting. Allow quiet time to observe the falls and give worshippers space.

A dedicated excursion from Tawang

Arunachal Tourism gives an approximate four-hour drive from Tawang city and places the site near the Tsechu hot-water spring. Plan it as a dedicated remote excursion, with the return journey and any nearby spring visit agreed in advance, rather than an extra stop on a Bum La day.

Border-area access

Access depends on current border-area permissions, traveller eligibility, weather and road conditions. Arrange the authorised approach and vehicle with the local team before committing to the visit. The final approach and walking requirements should be checked for your group.

Respecting a pilgrimage site

Keep noise low, ask before photographing people or religious objects, and follow local instructions at shrines. Do not treat the falls as a bathing or adventure attraction, leave litter or photograph security installations.
