Tawang & West Kameng

Chilipam Monastery near Rupa

Chilipam Monastery stands on a hilltop near Rupa in West Kameng. Buddhist art and views across the surrounding valleys make it a worthwhile monastery stop on the West Kameng part of a journey towards Tawang.

A monastery above the valleys

Arunachal Tourism uses Chilipam, while West Kameng’s district administration uses Chillipam Monastery or Chillipam Gompa. Both names refer to this monastery near Rupa.

The district describes a promontory with broad valley views and Buddhist art in the sanctuary. The hilltop setting is part of the appeal even when cloud limits the panorama.

Where it fits on the route

The district places the monastery approximately 15 kilometres from Rupa. The approach leaves Rupa and ascends to the hilltop, making Rupa the natural starting point for a visit.

For journeys including Shergaon or Bomdila, allow time for the detour rather than treating the monastery as a through-road stop. The day’s approach and overnight determine how it fits.

Visiting the prayer hall

This is a working monastery: dress respectfully, speak quietly and follow instructions about footwear and interior photography. Give ceremonies priority and ask before entering an occupied prayer hall. Visitors who need to avoid steps should discuss the parking-to-hall approach before travel.
