History
The dzong was a fortified administrative seat and jail under the Monpa system, with massive stone walls and a single controlled entrance. Families still occupy the houses within.
Culture
Narrow lanes, stone-and-timber homes, drying chillies and maize on the balconies. This is an inhabited heritage site, not a preserved ruin.
Photography tips
Compress the lanes with a short telephoto. Ask before photographing people — and accept no as an answer.
Local travel tips
Go in the late afternoon when households are back from the fields and the light is warm on the stone.
