History
The Monpa are among the oldest Buddhist communities in India, with a material culture — handmade paper, wooden vessels, carpets, thangka painting — that has survived because it is still used, not because it is displayed.
Culture
Expect butter tea and zan on arrival. Losar and Torgya are the two festivals worth planning a trip around.
Photography tips
Kitchen light through a smoke hole is the most beautiful available light in the region. Sit, drink the tea, and photograph after twenty minutes, not on arrival.
