Sangti Valley near Dirang: black-necked cranes, kiwi and apple orchards, the best easy river walk in West Kameng and where to stay.
History
Sangti's fame among naturalists rests on the black-necked crane, a species sacred in Buddhist tradition, which historically wintered on these gravel flats. Sightings have become rare and the community now runs its own habitat protection effort.
Culture and daily life
Monpa farming villages line the valley floor, growing kiwi, apple, walnut and large-cardamom. Several households have converted upper floors into homestays with wood-fired kitchens.
Photography notes
The braided river and pale gravel bars work beautifully in flat overcast light. Blossom season in March gives foreground pink against dark conifer slopes. Keep a long lens for crane and redstart work along the bank.
Practical travel tips
Walk it rather than drive it. Four kilometres along the river past the trout farm is the single best easy walk in the district, and suits families and older travellers.
15 minutes from Dirang on a paved valley road.
