History
Thembang is a walled village with stone gateways at either end, historically the seat of a Monpa clan that collected tolls on the trans-Himalayan trade route. Sections of the wall and the two dzong gates survive, and the settlement sits on India's UNESCO tentative list.
Culture and daily life
The community runs a conservation-linked tourism initiative and homestays inside the old walls. Elders can still recount the toll system and the clan lineages tied to individual houses.

Late afternoon side-light on the stone walls is the shot. Interiors are dark — a fast prime and a willingness to sit quietly with a family for an hour beats any flash.
Practical travel tips
Stay a night. Thembang as a two-hour stop is a photograph; Thembang as an overnight is the reason people come back to Arunachal.
About 1 hour from Dirang by a steep branch road off the Bomdila highway.
