History

Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama and the most unconventional figure in that lineage — a poet who refused monastic confinement — was born here in 1683. The monastery is small, weathered and largely unvisited.

Culture

A handful of monks maintain it. The tree said to have grown from his walking stick still stands in the courtyard.

Photography tips

Small, low-light interiors. Shoot the courtyard and the prayer wheels in soft morning light; be discreet inside.

Local travel tips

Fifteen minutes from town and skipped by most package itineraries. Pair it with the craft centre on your Tawang town day.

How to reach

5 km from Tawang town, 15 minutes.
